Many years ago, when I began martial arts training, our school had a wood floor with a thin layer of carpet. Many times I saw my partners thrown onto and bounced off the floor and saw holes stomped through the floorboard. Well, in due time, we moved to a facility with cement floors and so we installed several layers of training mats so that our bodies could absorb the impact of our rough and tumble training. Those mats can be expensive.
Even cursory browsing through the offers for training mats for wrestling or gymnastics will reveal that you could spend $700 to several thousand dollars for mats that cover a relatively limited space, anywhere between ten to 13 square feet.
However, there is an affordable alternative.
Puzzle mats are 2 foot by 2 foot or 3 foot by 3 foot dense foam cushion pieces that interlock like puzzle pieces, allowing you to join the pieces together to cover the desired amount of floor space for training purposes. The thickness of the mats range from 1/2 inch to 2 inches. The surface of the mats are vinyl and the mats are durable. There are several advantages to using puzzle mats for your training at home or martial arts schools.
As stated, puzzle mats are affordable. The price range is anywhere between $10 to $30 per piece. Of course, you will want to buy more than one piece, because at the very least you are likely to want to cover ten square feet of floor space for training purposes, probably more space. At this price, it is possible to pay only a couple hundred dollars, depending on how much space you want to cover, to buy enough puzzle mat pieces for your training space.
You might want to set up your garage as your own private Dojo, you might have a school downtown, maybe you plan a demonstration at a local school. These mats can be easily carried and set up anywhere there’s floor space. When finished, if necessary, you can take the pieces apart from each other, stack them in the corner or a storage space, or pack them in the truck to cart to the next adventure.
Training on a hard floor can take its toll on the body in many ways. Doing forms, running through techniques, or sparring on a hard floor can quickly wear down your feet, your back, and your knees. And when getting slammed on the floor during a throw, serious injury could occur to bones, joints, and head. For the sake of safety, matting the training space is necessary.
In addition to providing this safety necessity, puzzle mats also allow for ease of movement; allow for both movement and traction, the surface of the mats are ideal.
Puzzle mats are durable and easy to clean; whether you want to disassemble the mats to take them out to be hosed down and scrubbed, or you want to wipe them down with a mop while still on the floor, they are easy to clean. They are water-proof and strong. And they can take punishment, with feet running across them, and heavy bodies being slammed on them, they stand the test of time.

I have been training in martial arts since the early 1980s and have a 2nd degree Black Belt in Kenpo and have training in Eskrima. I believe everyone has a right to defend themselves by any effective means necessary.
